Question Number: 20041

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 9/23/2008

RE: AYSO Rec Under 13

Cameron of Palmdale, CALIF USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 20028

The Referee Administrator of our Region begs to differ about you response to the drop ball rolling into goal situation. He says that once the drop ball hits the pitch it is a live ball and therefore a goal is scored if it rolls into goal without anyone playing it. Your thoughtful counter response please?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

He can beg all he wants
Infringements and Sanctions
The ball is dropped again:
? if the ball leaves the field of play after it makes contact with the
ground, without a player touching it

No GOAL is scored directly against any team off a dropball!

Cheers
PS I get that law 10 states Goal Scored
A goal is scored when the whole of the ball passes over the goal
line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, provided that no
infringement of the Laws of the Game has been committed previously ***by the team scoring the goal.***

After **a team scores a goal, ***the kick-off is taken by the other team.
Consider
Which team scores on a dropball that neither touches?
Here is a test question!
The referee drops the ball on the edge of the 6 yard goal area the ball strikes his foot is missed by the two opposing players and the ball rebounds off against the goal post and enters into the goal under the crossbar bewteen the posts and completely over the goal line .
What is the referee's decision?
(1)Award a goal to the other team whose goal it is not as he rarely scores and needs to celebrate like eveyone else. restart kick off
(2)Yell at the two players for not touching the ball thus making his effort to score no good, Caution them both for miskicking so badly into air retake but insisit on diferent players
(3) Pretend that it was a practice drop move away to a spot much further away claiming the downhill slope was responsible redrop
(4) Redrop the ball at the same spot and get his bloody big toe out of the way

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Your referee administrator needs to become more familiar with the Laws of the Game, as Ref Dawson has quoted.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Your Referee Administrator is incorrect. Please point him towards the relevant parts of Law 8. While it is true the ball is in play once it hits the ground, it is ALSO true that if no player touches it before it leaves the field of play, the ball is dropped again. That's word for word from Law 8 something your Referee Administrator should be familiar with.
