Question Number: 20074

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/26/2008

RE: AYSO Under 15

Jack of Santa Ana, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 20056

In reference to Referee Contarino's response, wouldn't the call that should have been made a Send Off (Red Card) for Serious Foul Play (SFP) since the Misconduct was an excessive force foul. The ball was in play at the time and thus should not be violent conduct (VC). Am I missing something. Also, thanks to everyone there for your thoughtful responses and expertise.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

If the opponent was making a legitimate play for the ball, it would have been serious foul play. But when the goalkeeper has the ball in her hands, she cannot be legally challenged. Therefore any agression against her is sanctioned the same as if the ball was out of play or was not near the players - violent conduct.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

in my opinion after reviewing the question, there was no play for the ball, hence the violent conduct.
