Law 18 - Common Sense 10/11/2008

RE: AYSO Under 8

Scott Worthington of huntington beach, ca usa asks...

If a player falls down accidentally in front of a running opposing player, and the opposing player then stumbles over the downed player and falls down, is this considered tripping?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

No we call that an accident and at age u-8 likely pick them up and dust em off.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

When the U18's do this, you look with your cynical eye to see just why the player took a fall. Did he actually make this 'accident' happen? And I've heard it said that the pros do almost nothing by accident.

In other words, as the level of play goes up, the number of true accidents goes down. At U8, if you whistled for every accident, you'd wear out your lips.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

You don't punish accidents. Accidents happen less frequently as the skill level of the players increases
