Question Number: 20237League Specific 10/13/2008RE: Rec Level 9 Under 15 Cathy of Harmony, PA US asks...I'm USSF certified, but my son just is finishing his first HS soccer season and I don't understand the PIAA soft reds/hard reds. Can you explain? What other situation other than 2nd caution would warrant a soft red? Also, what is expected to happen with the experimental 5 minute rule for a caution? Thank you. Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol NFHS is the only entity that has the so-called 'soft red'. It means that a player is sent off, but can be replaced by a substitute. Some state implementations of NFHS rules vary, so which offenses other than a second caution apply, you would have to check with the state HS athletic association. Also with the 5-minute caution rule. Does PA still use the weird 3-whistle system, where the referees rotate positions about 1/3 and 2/3's of the way through the game?
