Question Number: 20293Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/18/2008RE: Under 17 Steven of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...What is the restart when the ref stops play to give a red card for abusive language ,when the ball is in play? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Depends on who's spouting off his mouth. If it's a player on the field, the restart is an indirect free kick at the spot of the verbal torrent. If it's a substitute who entered the field illegally, it's an IFK at the spot of the ball. If it's a player who is off the field, a substitute, a substituted player or a coach/manager/team official, it's a dropped ball.

If the misconduct is on the field by a substituted player or team official the restart is a dropped ball. If the misconduct is off the field it's a dropped ball

View Referee Keith Contarino profileAnswer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Depends on a couple of things. First, who mouthed off, and second where was this person? The answers below assume the play was stopped for the sending off for OIAL. If a player on the field, restart is an IDFK from where the player mouthed off. If a substitute on the field without permission (how else does a sub get on the field?) then it is an IDFK from where the ball was when play was stopped. If a player or substitute off the field, then the restart is a dropped ball. If it is a subbed player or team official at any time, any place it is a dropped ball.
