Question Number: 20295

Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 10/18/2008

RE: rec Under 11

Victoria Jenks of Honolulu, Hawaii USA asks...

Our team has a goal kick and places it on the corner line of the goal box. I know it must travel outside the penalty box before it can be touched. But must it travel forward? Can our kicker pass it to a player on the side of the penalty box?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Sure. The only requirement is the ball clear any penalty area boundary before it is played. Thanks for the question.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

There is no requirement that the ball has to go forward on a goal kick. For example, it could be passed to a player who is next to the corner flag.

Nor is there any requirement that the ball must be placed on the corner of the goal area, or on the 6-yard-line. It could be placed anywhere inside the goal area, including on the lines.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

At least you know the ball MUST clear the area, puts you ahead of many others. In point of fact, ANY free kick, not just goal kick of YOURS from inside your penalty area must clear the boundrylines. The direction is unimportant th ball must bekicked into play over the boundry lines into active play. Cheers
