RE: Middle school soccer Under 14

Kyle of Voorhees, New Jersey USA asks...

How do you referee with the two-man system?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I don't and you shouldn't either. It is an abomination and an incredibly stupid idea only done here in the US. The 3 man system is the only system recognized by FIFA and US Soccer. If you want to do games under High School rules and they use a two man system, you will soon see why it's a bad idea.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Most of us on the panel do not like the two man system even if we can understand the reasons those have who do so. lack of numbers, pay etc.. It is not an approved FIFA or USSF system and not recognized for assessment or match requirements. It was tried as an experiment but found to be less effective than the 3 man system of diagonal control.

Although each is to work their side of the half there will be angles of view and positions where you will see something the other official might not particularly in the midfield areas or along touchlines. The two official better sort out who is the senior referee set aside any egos and work on trying to find the threshold of what passes for trifling or doubtful.
I have tried it at certain tournaments and found it ok to work with some referees and a nightmare with others.
Cheers
