Question Number: 20455

League Specific 11/6/2008

RE: High School 2A High School

Craig Benedict of Efland, NC USA asks...

Can a player throw the ball in with textured gloves?
These gloves seemed to be a remarkable advantage. They were not used for warmth but for better grip.
Rules seem to say with your hands, not hands and gloves.
It may be similar to how high tack gloves were outlawed in football.
thank you

Answer provided by Referee Gil Weber

Normally the only equipment field players are allowed to wear includes shirts, shorts, shinguards, socks, and shoes. Goalkeepers are given the additional latitude to wear gloves, long pants, and brimmed hats.

Exceptions including long pants, gloves, and knit caps are typically allowed to field players only when it is unusually cold, and then the gloves must for the sole purpose of keeping the hands warm. Textured gloves worn for no purpose other than to enable a field player to grip the ball and throw it farther give that player an **unfair** advantage over other players and are not allowed.
