Question Number: 20474

Kicks From The Penalty mark 11/9/2008

RE: Adult

Frank of jefferson city, mo usa asks...

Team A(player 1) misses first pk, Team B(player 1) also misses first pk. Score 0-0 Team A(player 2) and Team B(player 2) both make thier pk's. Score 1-1 Team A(player 3) makes 3rd pk and Team B(player 3) misses. Score 2-1 Team A(player 4)makes his pk and Team B(player 4) misses. Score 3-1.
My question is which Team A player (if any) would get credit for the game winning goal?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

We are referees, we write the details of the match events in a report! We have no idea why anyone should recieve credit for a team effort!
Cheers

Why this scoring is so important escapes me, but I would assume it is the last scorer who puts the team over the top.

If the game ended 7-3, would you have considered the player who scored the 4th goal to be the game winner? And would that make the next 3 goals irrelevant and meaningless?

Statistics are created for the benefit of coaches, broadcasters and pedants. Referees aren't concerned with which player scored, but rather with how many total goals there are for each team.

Firstoff, these are NOT PKs (penalty kicks). A penalty kick is awarded to the attacking team when one of the defending team commits one of the direct kick fouls inside their own penalty area. What you are asking about is a way to determine the winner of a match by Kicks From The Penalty Mark. No fouls have been committed so these are not PKs. We are a referee site and do not really know the correct answer to this question. If such a statistic exists I would guess that the last kicker would get credit but, to me, this is a silly statistic as it minimizes the effect of the other goals.
