Law 16 - Goal Kick 11/12/2008

RE: College

Aaron of Swansea, Wales asks...

When the ball goes out of play for a goal kick, does it have to be placed on the side it went out, or can the keeper decide which side it is taken from?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Aaron,
any outgoing free kick, including a goal kick which is an offside exempt free kick, in FAVOUR of the defending team which occurs inside their 6 yard goal area is taken from ANYWHERE inside the goal area!
There is no right or left side or middle just place the ball where the kicker wants the ball to be as long as it is inside the 1080 square foot goal area.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

A goal kick may be taken from ANYWHERE inside the goal area. This is unlike a corner kick which must be taken from the corner closest to where the ball went out of play.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Any side the keeper chooses.

The referees don't usually like the ball to be moved once it's placed however...
