Question Number: 20791Law 1- The Field 2/2/2009RE: Rec, Challenge, Classic Under 19 Glenn of Wake Forest, NC USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 20777 As a follow-up, what is the correct call if a player unintentionally kicks the flag while taking a corner kick? In a youth (U-13? -- fuzzy memory) rec game the kicker kicked the flag and the ball at the same time, resulting in a dislodged flag and a poor kick that was easily cleared by the defense. I allowed play to continue since the offense received no benefit from the kick and the defense had gained control and was advancing the ball. The flag was replaced at the next stoppage (by myself since it was in the center's diagonal). Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Good decision, Glenn.

Law 1 doesn't address accidentally kicking a part of the field so allowing things to continue is correct. Law 5 demands the referee stop things if a player is seriously injured and we must remember the seriousness of an injury is inversely proportional to the age of the injured player [or at least as far as Mom is concerned]. We must take care when allowing things to continue if there is a bent child on the park. Another thing to consider is this: if a player is going to accidentally kick a corner flagpost he can just as easily kick a referee or referee's assistant. While this could be painful it is just the same as kicking the corner flagpost or a goal post. Stay clear of players... Regards,
