Question Number: 21062

League Specific 3/30/2009

RE: Travel Under 9

Jim Williams of Robesonia, PA USA asks...

U12 game is 7 minutes into the second half. It thunders. The ref stops the game and the teams will wait 30 min to see if play can resume. Minutes later a tornado warning is issued and the game is called and everyone scatters. Is the game officially over? The score is 4 to 0. The coach on the losing side wants to rescedule the game and start over. The coach on the winning side either wants the game to be ended as a win or play only a half and resume with the score 4 to 0. Who's call is it? Is there a FIFA law for this?

Thanks.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Neither FIFA nor US Soccer give the referee any authority in this matter. The referee will write a report detailing the events and give the report to the proper authorities who will decide how to proceed.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Leagues I referee for have various methods of deciding what to do about incomplete games. One counts it complete if we've made it to halftime. Another if the second half has started. Another if 2/3 of the game minutes have been played - you really have to be sure to record the time of the stoppage in that one.

The league you play in must decide what to do.
