RE: Competitive High School

Angela Rogers of Cook, WA USA asks...

Is there a rule in High school soccer that there has to be more than one referee on the field? We have played one team twice on their field and each time they have only had one referee. This seems to be unfair since it must be very hard to see everything on the field. How can they possibly call off sides if they are at the other end of the field?
We always have line refs but they do not. They claim it is because of distance.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

It would depend on your state association rules as to how many referees are required. It is rare to see only one ref on a HS game, unless it is a junior varsity or freshman game.

You would need to speak with the HS association referee assignor for more information.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

There is no such rule. Many games are called by one referee. You're right that it's hard to see if a player is offside, teams need to be aware of this and adjust their tactics accordingly. I would consider running an offside trap in such a situation a tremendously risky idea.
