Question Number: 21265League Specific 5/4/2009RE: Other Rana Bose of Kolkata, West Bengal India asks...A player who has been already yellow carded in an earlier match scores a goal and takes off his shirt in jubilation. The referee shows him the yellow card for this. will he have to sit out the next match because of the double yellow card? Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

View Referee Michelle Maloney profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Some leagues have a caution accumulation rule - after X number of cautions in games that season, you are suspended for a game. In your league, if X=2, then the player would have to sit out the next game. This rule has no effect on the current game, only on future games.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Keith Contarino The Law requires a sending off and red card with the subsequent ban of at least one more match for the accumulation of 2 cautions in a SINGLE match. If your League has an accumulation rule, it is possible this second caution could result in such a prohibition but I doubt just 2 cautions over the span of 2 matches would result in any further sanctions.

View Referee Keith Contarino profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson As much as I dislike this mandatory booking violation it is what it is! It is feasible if the league or tournament has specified cumulative match cautions as a precondition of play will force a match suspension! Yellow card accumulation penalties on the international scene often work on this principle where two cautions will equal the next match suspension. There is no red card or send off involved! Cheers
