RE: Adult

John Mehic of London, London U.K asks...

What is the general sign used between Referees and ARs when an AR wants to indicate an IDFK to the Referee? No official signal exists, and there always seems to be a need to translate verbally in my games since it is different for most Referees, and pregames don't usually cover it.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

There is no general sign. The referee and ARs will discuss it in the pregame, and if it is felt that a signal is needed, they will agree upon what to use.

I will say that generally, ARs will not be calling IDFK offenses.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Even though this is something I go over at every pregame, I have yet to have an AR call an IDFK foul nor as an AR have I.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

It happens so infrequently that I do not have a signal to use, nor have I been informed of one when I work as an AR. The one time as AR that I can remember calling an IFK offense that was not obvious to the center I simply called out, 'Indirect.'

Communication by voice works best! I suppose if the AR was to raise and wiggle the flag then indicate direction with the flag he could raise the arm of the free hand to indicate INDFK.
Cheers
