Question Number: 21413League Specific 5/26/2009RE: competive High School felix breedy of irvington, new jersey usa asks...on a throw in, can the referee dis-allow a substitution before the ball is put into play, if the player was not up and ready but was going to the scorer's bench for entry into the game? Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Yes. On a throw-in, the substitute must have reported to the scorer's table or the official area BEFORE the dead ball situation. NFHS Rule 4.4.1.d.

View Referee Michelle Maloney profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson The substitute must be acknowledged/checked and ready at the midline prior to the stoppage. It is remotely possible this was just being completed as the whistle was going and a referee might slide one through if the circumstances were not too critical!
