Question Number: 21521

Law 16 - Goal Kick 6/10/2009

RE: Under 19

M uyildiz of lic, ny ```04 asks...

This question is a follow up to question 21327

THE KICKER MUST NOT TOUCH THE BALL AGAIN

CONTRADICTS THE ANSWER ABOVE:

Devon if it is YOUR goal kick your entire team is allowed to be inside the penalty area although why you would want to is a mystery. On a Goal kick or in fact ANY defending free kick coming out from your own penalty area which includes the goal area the ball must travel into play across the penalty area boundries into the field BEFORE ANYONE from either team could play the ball a second time except of course the original kicker. ;o)

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

What contradiction do you see? Once the ball clears the penalty area, it is free to be played by any other player EXCEPT the original kicker.

As the creator of the answer I can only go huh?
You are correct the kicker could indeed play that ball BUT only to give up possession.
The kicker CANNOT touch the ball was certainly implict in the ;o) one eyed gotcha symbol since he would give away an INDFK.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The question you refer to asked what players were allowed inside the penalty area on a goal kick. The answer we gave, correctly, was the entire team taking the kick on ANY free kick coming out of the penalty area. The kicker must not touch the ball again is a quote from Law 16 but has nothing to do with our answers. If the kicker touches the ball again before the ball is outside the penalty area or if any of his teammates do this, the kick is retaken. Once the ball is in play the kicker may not kick it again until it touches any other player. This is true of ANY free kick. That would constitute a second touch and an IDFK would be awarded the opponents. No contradiction anywhere.
