Question Number: 21956

Law 16 - Goal Kick 9/13/2009

RE: Rec Under 11

Rob Wagner of Richmond, VA USA asks...

Can a defender take a goal kick, or does it have to be the goalie?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Any member of the team awarded the goal kick may take it. All members of the kicking team are allowed to be inside the penalty area at the taking of the kick but if the ball touches one of them the kick is retaken. No members of the opposing team may be inside the penalty area at the taking of the goal kick. If one enters the penalty area and touches the ball the kick is retaken. The ball is not in play until it has completely left the penalty area.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Any player can take any restart - be it a goal kick, corner kick, free kick, penalty kick, throw in or kick off.

With young players in particular it's quite normal for a field player to take goal kicks.
