RE: select Under 16

bill stacy of detroit, MI USA asks...

In a recent High School game. Folks at the scorers table used an air horn to get the ref's attention to alert him to a substitution. Isn't this prohibited? Was in a Michigan HS game.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

The NFHS rules say after a substitute has reported to the scorer, the scorer shall have the timer signal the referee the first time the substitution is possible.

There is no mention of how that signal shall be made. Your state may have additional rules that apply here, but I am not aware of any at this time.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

I asked several Michigan HS refs about this. One of them reports:

This signal has been widely adopted to be an air horn, but does not need to be an air horn, it could be a buzzer on the score board, or any other effective signal.

As far as the OAA High School referees are concerned, there has been no specific designation as to the method, however an air horn is widely used state wide. An air horn has been discussed over the years as a typical piece of equipment at the scorers table.
