Question Number: 22350

Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 10/25/2009

RE: High School

Ray of Easton, Pa USA asks...

If a goalie saves a ball from a shot. then the ball slips out of his/her hands The goalie then has the ball inbounds then steps ON the end line NOT fully out of bounds. What is the call? nothing or corner kick?

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

The penalty area lines exist in part to let the goalkeeper know where she can use her hands legally on the ball. It is the ball we focus on, not where the keeper is located. As long as the ball is in the penalty area, she can legally handle it, no matter where the rest of her body is located - with a few exceptions having to do with teammates and letting go of control/possession, none of which apply here.

So unless the BALL left the field last touched by the keeper, there is no call. If the ball left the field entirely, then it would have been a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Stepping on the line is a nothing? The only way the corner kick could occur is the entire ball must pass beyond the goal line into touch. Feet do not matter, ball position matters!
Cheers
