Question Number: 22394League Specific 10/30/2009RE: high school High School kelley of medway, ma usa asks...in massachusetts can a player on the feild call a time out Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Kelley Time outs are not part of soccer and the only person that can stop play is the referee, no one else. The referee will stop play for an injury that he believes requires immediate treatment or something that is interfering with the game or causing a danger such as an illegal person on the field, a dog chasing the ball, bad weather etc. Other than that its play on for the full period of play.

I believe Massachusetts is one of them, but you will need to check with your local association for details as to whom and when a time out can be requested. I recall hearing that in Mass. a head coach or field player could request a time out in certain circumstances once per half, but the referee still had to grant the request.
