Question Number: 22450Law 5 - The Referee 11/6/2009RE: seven Under 15 Alex of near Brighton, Sussex England asks...If the ball deflects off the referee and goes into the goal, does he award a goal or a drop-ball? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Referee Alex One of the worst nightmares for a referee. The goal has to stand and no doubt he will get huge grief from the team that has conceded. It is vitally important that the referee does not position himself where that can happen in a game.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Richard Dawson As a natural field condition it is a goal. The referee then hits the remote starter on his car so it is ready for a quick getaway. As my colleague correctly points out anticipate being OUT of the way as you will not garner any credability if this occurs! Cheers

Whether a ball hits the referee or A/R on the field of play makes no difference where the ball goes next. Officials are regarded as part of the field just like goal posts or corner flags. Award the goal and do not get credit for the assist.
