Law 5 - The Referee 12/30/2009

RE: Pro Professional

John Schneider of La Mirada, CA USA asks...

When creating a referee's record of the match: Does the second-half begin as the 46th minute, even if their was stoppage time added to the first half? So for example, if the first half had 2.5 minutes of stoppage time added, does the second half officially begin at 47:31 for record-keeping purposes?

Thank you.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The first half, without any added time, is minutes 1 through 45. The second half is minutes 46 through 90. An incident that happened in added time is denoted in game summaries with a plus sign.

If a team that scores a goal in the second minute of added time, that is noted as 47+. If they go on to score another goal in the second minute of the second half, it is recorded as happening at 47.

If writing a report about an incident, I would be sure to describe the time explicitly: 'In the second minute of added time in the first half, Player X did ...'

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Referee Schneider
The second half begins at 46 through to 90 and like Referee Voshol I would distinguish between added time in the first half and the second half on any report.
