Question Number: 22726

Law 5 - The Referee 1/16/2010

RE: College

selam of addis ababa, addis ababa ethiopia asks...

what is the name of extra time and switching player number displaying board that the 4th referees use? and also where is it sold?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Selam
Allowance is made in either period for all time lost through:
? substitutions
? assessment of injury to players
? removal of injured players from the fi eld of play for treatment
? wasting time
? any other cause
The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.
It is usually referred to as added time. Extra time refers to the two periods of 15 minutes at the end of a game to decide the result of a tie.

The boards that are used by the 4th official can be simple number signs to LEd display boards

Selam

As referee McHugh indicates, the device is called a Substitution Board.

This is most likely found at professional matches and not likely at an amateur match, due to the cost.

Here are some more web sites with various examples:

These are only some immediate examples of the products that are sold. The electronic boards can be expensive, and sometimes difficult to see in direct sunlight. Therefore, numbers on plastic cards are kept along the touch line to improve visibility for some games.

These devices are typically operated by the Fourth Official
