Question Number: 22889Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 3/3/2010RE: Varsity High School Lowell Frobish of Auburn, Alabama USA asks...What is the significance of the goal area in high school varsity matches other than placement of the ball for goal kicks, indirect free kicks near the goal line, etc? Does the goalkeeper have special protection privileges in this area? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Lowell It has no significance other than for the reasons you mentioned. The goalkeeper has no special privileges in this area. Prior to 1997 the goalkeeper could be legally charged inside the goal area. That has since been removed from the Laws and the goalkeeper cannot be charged now, while in possession of the ball, in any location inside the PA.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham There is no difference in high school rules than under the laws of the game. It now only signifies the place for certain restarts (goal kicks, etc). At one time, the goalkeeper could be legally charged inside the area only if in possession of the ball or obstrucing an opponent. While it certainly encouraged keepers to quickly release the ball, it also led to sore keepers.
