Question Number: 22928Law 16 - Goal Kick 3/10/2010RE: 8 Adult Jimmy of Houston, US asks...Can be a goal if a defensive player takes a quick goal kick and does not allow an opponent to leave the penalty area and while doing that the ball hits the opponent's back and goes into the defensive players goal? Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham No goal. On a goal kick, the ball is not in play until the ball leaves the penalty area. Because it touched the attacker before the ball was in play, the goal kick must be retaken. However, a quick kick can be taken even if an offensive player is still inside the penalty area and the referee should ordinarily let play continue. The difference in this case, however, is that the ball was not properly put into play.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Referee Jimmy The ball has to leave the PA on a goal kick for it to be in play. If it inadvertently hits an attacker inside the PA the goal kick is retaken. If it leaves the PA without touching anyone play can continue on a quick goal kick even with attackers inside the PA.
