Question Number: 22981Law 15 - Throw In 3/22/2010RE: Adult Marcel Ijezie of Onitsha, Anambra Nigeria asks...In a football pitch, the assistant referees are positioned at the left side of the halves(considering it from the goal post). In a case of throw-in which happened at those side of the pitch without an assistant ref and the centre ref did have a clear view of it, whose decision will he take i.e which of the assistant referees. Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham This is discussed by the referee team in their pregame discussion. The referee will usually indicate throw-ins in the referee's half and may ask the assistant referee along that touchline to mirror the referee's indication with a subsequent flag. They will also discuss how the referee will silently ask for assistance when unsure by making eye contact.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney The referee makes the final decision in any case, but the assistant referee is responsible for signals for direction on his half of the touchline. As Ref Wickham indicates, referee crews should discuss their mechanics prior to the game, and make eye contact before giving a signal.
