Question Number: 22991

Law 1- The Field 3/24/2010

RE: competitive Adult

andyparry of shrewsbury, shropshire england asks...

Can a tee be used to raise the ball off the ground when taking a goal kick?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Andy
No, this would definitely not be allowed nor would making a mound with the foot be allowed either. Having said that many of the pitches that we play on don't have Premier League standard playing surfaces so it is easy to find a raised spot to place the ball on somewhere inside the goal area. In a number of recent games I have watched goalkeepers scuff the ground with the boot to make a 'mark' to place the ball on . Some referees see this as trifling and let it slide while other will take action with either a reprimand or a caution.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Absolutely not! The Laws of the Game forbid it, and any player who has such a thing or tries to make it out of dirt on the field will find himself facing a caution for unsporting behavior.

If one wishes to use tees, one should play either golf or American style pointy ended football.
