Question Number: 23154Law 16 - Goal Kick 4/20/2010RE: Mostly Recreational Other Donna Meredith of Amissville, VA USA asks...I just want to get a verification. A goalie is doing a goal kick. The ball does not cross the penalty area and he re-kicks it. My rule would be that the restart would be a goal kick because the ball was never in play when the second touch occurred. I want to make sure this is correct. Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Correct. Since the ball was touched (by anyone) before it left the penalty area, it must be retaken.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol You are correct. I remember thinking in one game, as the ball is slowly rolling out of the PA and the keeper is going for it, 'Oh, don't touch it. I don't remember if it would be a retake or an indirect free kick in.' Something else happened so I didn't have to make that decision, but when I went home I immediately looked it up, so I wouldn't make a mistake if it happened again.
