Question Number: 23241Other 5/3/2010RE: Adult felipe vasquez of apo, ae usa asks...What is the age limit to become a referee under ussf rules? Also, being a ussf referee can you officiate high school games? And what is the age limit to be a referee under the NFHS rules? Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney There are several USSF classifications for new referees. Recreational referees (blue badge) can do U14 and below only. We like them to be at least 11 or 12 up to adult. The entry level adult badge is a Grade 8 referee. We prefer someone be at least 14 to adult to take this course. I do not know the age requirements for AYSO referees. NFHS requires referees (at least in Texas - check your local state) to be at least 17 to officiate in HS. If you have a USSF registration, that is a good thing, but not required.

The recreational referee class is more appropriate for those 11 to 14. AYSO similarly has a U8 certification for age 10, but the basic referee class is designed for those over 12. High school matches are not typically affiliated with USSF, and require a different certification from a local association. In my area, it is helpful to be experienced in USSF matches.
