Question Number: 23326

Kicks From The Penalty mark 5/17/2010

RE: Competive Under 14

Mark of Meridian, Idaho USA asks...

We recently played in a semi final game that went to PK's. My question is, are you allowed to switch keepers in the middle of the shoot out? I know your keeper is allowed to be one of the shooters just never seen a keeper change in the middle of a shoot out. They did at least switch with one of the eleven on the field.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Yes. Any of the players participating in the kicks from the penalty mark may change places with the keeper. In theory, the team could switch with each kick.

A substitute keeper from the bench, however, would be lawful only if the original keeper became injured.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Mark
This is indeed allowed and there is no restriction as long as it is done at a stoppage and the referee is informed. It does happen quite regularly at underage levels due to perhaps the availability of a good shot stopping goalkeeper playing outfield. Normally teams struggle to get one goalkeeper.
Provided the team has not used all its substitutions a team can make a goalkeeping substitution during KFTPM if the original keeper became injured. If the team has used all is subs then an outfield player has to take over the goalkeeping duties. A normal substitution cannot be made during KFTPM
