Question Number: 23517Kicks From The Penalty mark 6/20/2010RE: Professional Derek of Carlsbad, CA USA asks...With the recent IFAB decision that running up and feigning on a penalty kick is unsportsmanlike conduct resulting in a yellow card, I was wondering what would happen is a player would get sent off during his kick among KFTPM (a shootout). Does the team forfeit that kick? Or would it continue onto the next player on that team? Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy Derek, the idea of KFTPM is that teams alternate taking kicks. This principle is unalterable so no, they do not miss a kick. Simply a player, who has not taken a kick takes a kick. By the way, it is called: unsporting.

The team does not miss taking the penalty so a goal can still be scored. As the player is sent off the other team does not reduce its number to equate numbers. That only happens at the start of KFTPM.

If a player is sent off during KFTPM, whether for some violent action, spitting or offensive language, etc or for a second yellow, his team continues the kicks without him.

If the kick results in no goal, the kick counts. The other team will take its kick. If a goal was scored, the kick is retaken. A team may always change kickers when a retake is ordered. Thus, if the original kicker was sent off (e.g., a second caution in the match), another eligible player will take it.
