Question Number: 23589

League Specific 6/30/2010

eddie of lodi, nj usa asks...

Does a red flag stay w/ a player in the world cup into the finals? Or semis ?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

If a player receives a red card, the player will be suspended for at least one match. ( FIFA reserves the right to impose additional punishment based on the conduct which led to a send off.) . Thus, if a player is sent off and shown a red card in the quarter finals, the player will not participate in the semi-finals.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Eddie
If a player is suspended for the next game through a red card dismissal, the game he serves the suspension on can be a quarter final, semi- final or indeed the final.
The French captain Laurent Blanc in the 1998 World Cup was dismissed in the semi final against Croatia and he missed the final v Brazil because of his one match suspension.
In this WC if a player receives a yellow card in the semi final, having already been cautioned in a previous match he will not be suspended for the final.
