Question Number: 23590

Law 1- The Field 6/30/2010

RE: Competitive Under 17

James of Ottawa, Ontario Canada asks...

If the lines on the field are not straight and swerve noticeably outward or inward for a yard or two, would you consider a ball out of play only when it has crossed the physical line, or would you draw an imaginary straight line, ignoring the irregularity?

Of course, in any case, the improperly lined field must be reported to the relevant competition or league officials so that it can be fixed.

However, I tend to favour using the actual line, since that is what the players will use. What are your professional opinons?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Referee James
The actual line on the field of play must be used not a straight imaginary line.
If it is so poorly lined that it can cause a problem for the referee I would insist that it is fixed before kick off. If the lines can't be fixed then just go with it.
Poor lines should always be reported to the relevant authority

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Use the actual lines. That just keeps things far simpler - can you imagine explaining to an angry player that 'yes, the ball was over the line. No, it's not out. Yes, I'm allowing their goal as a result'?

Keep it simple, go with the lines as they're marked.

If they're particularly swervy in some small places you could ask if they can be fixed, but usually we're stuck with it.
