Question Number: 23627

Kicks From The Penalty mark 7/6/2010

RE: College

Joe of london, uk asks...

hi,

i was wondering how long a penalty shoot-out lasts and if there is a limit so that the shoot-out doesn't last forever.

And what happens after a long time of endless goal scores?

Joe

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Joe
After five penalty kicks in Kicks from the Penalty Mark it then becomes sudden death. Penalty kicks continue until one team scores a penalty and the other team misses.
In UEFA competition the record stands in a match between England v Holland in the the 2007 Under 21 Championship where it took 32 penalties to decide a winner. The world record is 53 penalties set in a game in the Namibian Cup. I'm sure at lower levels it could be higher.
Sooner or later some player always misses. If the WC is anything to go by its always sooner.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

There is no limit to the number of kicks. Eventually, there will be a champion.

I've seen tournaments that, by rule, end with 'co-champions.' The players, however, seem to prefer the unfairness of kicks.
