Question Number: 23655

Law 1- The Field 7/12/2010

RE: Beginner Under 19

Navroop Singh of Amritsar, Punjab India asks...

What have been the latest reforms in football in terms of rules of play field ?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Navroop
A good question. Law 1 is one of the few Laws that has not been amended over many years. I believe that the late thirties was the last change to the Law with the addition of the penalty arc. There was an addition to allow a mark to be made 10 yards from the corner arc. There have been markings off the FOP to assist with determining encroachment at a corner kick.

Another relatively recent change in Law 1 is the optional usage of flags one yard/meter off the touchline at the center line. I don't recall if this or the optional mark for corner kick distance came last.
