Question Number: 23702

Law 5 - The Referee 7/25/2010

RE: Rec, Select, Competive Adult

Scott Madden of Watertown, NY USA asks...

This may seem as a silly question, but I figured what the heck. I am in the US Military and am shortly going to be moving to Germany for a couple of years. I have been a USSF certified Ref off and on since 2001. Is there any specific way to become certified once I'm in Germany? I'm assuming it is similair to the USSF since we follow FIFA rules for the most part. Just wondering if there are any websites or tips for me once I get over there to start officiating again. I am excited not only to be in Germany for my career but also for the chance to do some 'international' matches. Thanks for any tips or information I love this website!!!

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Scott
The answer ot your question depends on the type of games that you want to officiate. If it is 'friendlies' there are always games available. These are arranged locally and I'm sure that a colleague will be able to point you in the right direction once there.
To officiate competitive games a referee wil require certification from the German Football Federation same as USSF in the US. The following is the web address of the German Football Federation and Associations
http://www.dfb.de/index.php?id=3127
For example in Berlin the referee contact details can be viewed at
http://www.berliner-fussball.de/wdeutsch/themen/schiedsrichter/index.shtml

Best of luck with it

Another option is that some military bases have USSF-affiliated games, for both adults and dependent children of service personnel.

A good place to start is getting in touch with someone in an official capacity in USSF that has some knowledge of you and write you an introduction. It could even be an assignor.
