KFritz of Emeryville, CA USA asks...

History Question: When was a handball that prevents a goal declared an expulsion offense?
Caveat: I did this in a high school game in 1966, but not at the end of the game. I was not expelled. The goalie saved. We won. I was lauded.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Bragging about cheating to win a game? Geez.

It became a sending off offense for exactly the reasons you engaged in that behavior, in the hopes that it would dissuade players from such overt cheating. In any event, the advent of the sending off for DOGSOH at least means the other team has a player advantage for what may remain of the game, and the player 'who took one for the team' (what an idiotic statement) will now have to sit out at least one if not more games.
