Question Number: 24130

The Fourth Official 10/11/2010

RE: pro Adult

Naseem Uddin of Sargodha, Punjab pakistan asks...

Can 4th official sit or take chair during whole of 90-minutes of play and he has to perform duty by standing ?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Naseem
This is entirely a matter for the officials on the day. The role of the 4th official has now been expanded in the recent revision of the Laws of the Game. It is now necessary for the 4th official to have a good view of play and perhaps the only way to do that, depending on the technical area layout, is by standing.
However where feasible there is nothing wrong with being seated perhaps at the request of the referee or the competition organisers and to stand up when required such at substitutions, movement of players/technical staff etc.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The fourth official generally will stand throughout the match, unless instructed to sit by the referee during the pregame conference. It adds to the 4O's visible presence in the technical area. It makes it easier for eye contact with the referee if the 4O observes something requiring the referee's attention.
