Law 11 - Offside 10/18/2010

RE: competive u12 games. Under 13

sam of Palmdale , ca los angeles asks...

If you have two attackers in the onside position and both get behind the defense
due to quickness or speed but the trailer has the ball and passed it forward to his
teammate is this considered offside or not.
I Know if the attacker with ball is in front and passed back it's not, how about when it's the opposite.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Sam, someone evidently didn't teach you all of the offside law (11) in your certification class. The best explanation I've ever heard came from the instructor in my daughter's class.

Offside position is when you are ahead of the ball. That was the original interpretation. Now, it is the point that many forget.

Later it was added that you had to be in the attacking half, and that you had to be ahead of (originally 3, now) 2 defenders to be in an offside position.

But the original point of being ahead of the ball never changed.

So to answer your specific question, if attacker A is beyond the ball when attacker B passes it to her, A will be called for offside if she becomes involved in play.
