Question Number: 24360Law 13 - Free Kicks 11/21/2010RE: AYSO - Intermediate Under 11 Mark McMurtry of Corona, CA USA asks...Can a defensive player 'run at' a free kick (direct or in-direct)? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Mark
All defensive players must remain 10 yards from the ball until the kick is taken. If a defenders runs at a free kick and he is closer than 10 yards from the ball when it is kicked the referee has the discretion to either allow the kick to proceed depending on the outcome or stop play, caution the defender and order a retake.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol An opponent can run at a free kick, up until the point that she is 10 yards away from the site of the kick. She then can't get any closer until the kick has been taken.
If a player runs in closer and prevents the kick, she should be cautioned for failure to respect the required distance at a free kick.
