Question Number: 24379

League Specific 11/25/2010

RE: Club, B flyte Under 11

Jason Nova of Paramus, NJ US asks...

We tied for 2nd place in the final standings. 1st and 2nd place get to move onto 'A' flyte. A fact that is not lost on all the children. The team we tied with, same amount of wins, head to head we tied each other twice. Overall they have more goals for, we have fewer goals against. Any idea how the tie is btroken? Thank you.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The league rules should specify the order for tie breakers and rules vary after points and head to head. Sometimes they end with a simple coin toss.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jason
It is entirely a matter for the competition orgainisers to decide based on the competition rules.
Break of ties can be decided by goal difference, head to head results, play off game, away goals rule. At one time goal average was used but it is now rarely used.
The most common is goal difference and if that is equal usually goals scored is then taken into account. Some Leagues use head to head results with goal differnce being used if they are tied.
