Question Number: 24494

Law 15 - Throw In 1/16/2011

RE: Adult

kevin of whitehaven, cumbria england asks...

Double question I'm afraid. Can an outfield player take a throw-in wearing gloves? And, Is a goalkeeper allowed to take a throw-in? ps. thanks for the answer to my last question, it was worth a lot of bragging rights.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

1. There is no prohibition in the Laws of the Game about players wearing gloves, as long as they are safe.

2. Goalkeepers can do anything the rest of the players can do, including taking throw-ins.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The keeper can do anything another player may do, including taking a throw-in.

Gloves are not listed as equipment under the laws of the game, but are prohibited only if they are unsafe.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Gloves are not compulsory, so the question becomes are they safe? That is a decision for the referee.

As for keepers, they are just another player unless they are inside their own penalty area. Out on the field, they can kick and score goals, take corners, penalties, and yes, throw in balls. Heck, they can even commit fouls and misconduct out there, too!

Glad we could help out.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Kevin
There is no restriction in an outfield player taking a throw in using gloves that are deemed acceptable by the referee for play.
The goalkeeper is the same as any other player and there is no restriction in him/her taking throw ins.
