Question Number: 24568

Law 15 - Throw In 2/7/2011

RE: Rec Adult

brian casey of Newmarket, Ontario Canada asks...

Player takes a throw in, the ball hits the ref without touching any other player on the field.
The player that took the throw in touches the ball, what's the call??.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Brian
It is an indirect free kick from where the player touched the ball. The ball has to touch another player before it can be touched again by the thrower. The referee is just part of the field of play.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The person taking the throw-in cannot touch the ball a second time until it touches another player (from either team). But the referee is not a player. So play is stopped and the restart is an indirect free kick from the place where the thrower touched the ball a second time.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

IDFK for the opponents at the point the thrower touched the ball assuming you mean he touched with a part of his body other than his hands. If he handled it, then award a DFK or PK. The referee is part of the field.
