Please can you let me know if centre line flags were used and if so why were they replaced

Andy Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Law 1 makes these flags optional (located one yard behind each side of the halfway line).
They can be invaluable in determining quickly where the halfway line should be (necessary to determine offside position) on a poorly lined, muddy field. Unfortunately, on a poorly lined, muddy field, the 'optional flag' is usually missing.
They have more historic value on a perfectly prepared pitch.

The Laws of the Game allow for their current use which is optional. I have never seen them used in games but could be helpful to determine offside at the half way line. Many teams struggle to provide 4 compulsory corners flags never mind 2 optional ones.
