Question Number: 24668

League Specific 3/8/2011

RE: College

becks of London, NEPAL asks...

In Champions League, If both team play in their home and away match and both team win by 2 - 1 in their home match. If this happen which team qualify for the next round and which will eliminate?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Article 8 provides:

'If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e. if both teams score the same number of goals at home and away, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played at the end of
the second leg. If, during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark (Article 17) determine which club qualifies for the next stage.'

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Becks
In the Champions League if the scores are tied at the end of the 2nd leg the away goal rule applies which means that any away goal scored during both legs counts as two. If both teams have scored an equal number of away goals then extra time of 30 minutes is played. Away goals count double in extra time so if the away team scores during that time the game cannot then end in a tie.. If the team are still tied at the end of extra time the tie is resolved with kicks from the penalty mark.
