Question Number: 24797Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/10/2011RE: club Under 11 Sandy Kalatzis of brisbane, qld australia asks...This question is a follow up to question 22 If a goalkeeper puts the ball on the ground is the ball live . Other than a goal kick. My son got a goal this way but was disallowed saying the keeper has 6sec. Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham The keeper has six seconds to release the ball from possession. Putting the ball on the ground is one way to release possession. Note: however, that the keeper is considered to be in possession of the ball when the ball is on the ground so long he is still touching it with the hand.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Sandy Once the goalkeeper has possession of the ball he may not be challenged by an opponent. The GK has six seconds to release the ball. If he does not he may still not be challenged and the referee awards an IDFK from where the offence took place. However once the ball is thrown to the ground by the GK he has released possession of the ball and it may be challenged for on the ground by an opponent.
