Question Number: 24988

League Specific 5/22/2011

RE: Professional

Clarence Posa of Makati, Philippines asks...

In a first leg of home and away, the score is draw...is it necessary to have an extra time or is there a rule that to force a player to play an extra time on FIFA rules?

thanx

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Many competitions do not require a winner of a game, so no extra time is played.

If this is a home and away fixture to determine advancement in some kind of tournament, they may use the aggregate score method. The scores of both games are added together, and the total determines who advances.

If that aggregate score is tied, then away goals rule may come into effect. The goals scored by the away team in each game are doubled, and a new aggregate score is calculated.

If that score is still tied, extra time may be played at the second leg of the fixture.

If still tied, then Kicks From The Penalty Mark are used to determine who will advance in the tournamemt.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Everything depends on the competition authorities and whatever rules they have agreed upon for the competition. These rules will include whether or not there need to be tie-breakers, and if so, when and what type.
