Question Number: 24991Law 5 - The Referee 5/22/2011RE: Other Tyler Thayer of Sherwood, Oregon USA asks...I am a grade 8 referee and looking to upgrade to grade 7 soon. In the administrative handbook, it says I have to have an assessment from an assessor employed from the dsc. What is the dsc? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Best wishes on your aspirations to upgrade. I believe you are misreading the Referee Administrative Handbook. In the 2008-9 version (the one I have handy) it says, 'Pass one evaluation as referee in an affiliated Under-17 or higher level game employing the DSC'. The DSC is Diagonal System of Control - in other words, it must be a game with assistant referees.

Most states, for reasons only known to them, require that it be a boys game. I find that not only condescending but outright stupid. I have worked enough upper level youth games of both genders and while it is true the boys run a bit faster, girls games are just as competitive and often even more difficult to manage. Boys are more in your face but girls will wait until you're not looking and unload on an opponent. Teenagers regardless of gender are difficult to manage. Any parent know this. Get 22 highly competitive, skilled, athletic teenagers on a field and you better be watching.
