Kicks From The Penalty mark 6/9/2011

jds of NYC, NY USA asks...

Penalty shoot-out. Ball hits the cross-bar. GK runs into the field to celebrate. Meanwhile ball bounces off the pitch, well in front of the goal-line, takes 5 more bounces and rolls into the goal. Score or no score?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

If the ball went off the pitch, no goal but I think you are referring to a circulating video where the ball bounces off the crossbar and goes straight up in the air never leaving the pitch. The keeper foolishly runs away from the goal while the AR calmly stands and watches the ball backspin into the goal. Unless the referee indicates the kick is over, as long as the ball is on the field and in motion, a goal may be scored

Hi
As desribed this would be a perfectly good score. Here is an example of what you mean. Correct decision is to award a goal as Law 14 has not been broken and the referee waits until the penalty is completed.
